I am not entirely sure I’ve grasped the real essence of Eva Kotátková’s installation ‘A Storyteller’s Inadequacy’ at Modern Art Oxford (30 November 2013 – 2 February 2014). But since the title stresses the inadequacy of the storyteller (the artist herself?), I feel somewhat justified. I shall therefore write down only a few impressions and thoughts which this work of art has aroused in me, as scattered and fragmented as the objects on the horizontal soft blackboard of the installation.
~ The incredible similarity between Eva’s collages (exposed in the same gallery) and the installation. They are two completely different forms of arts, and yet there is something which makes them as unbelievably similar. They both convey calm, opacity, harmony through chaos.
~ At the question whether the objects had a precise meaning, the artist said she rather made intuitive decisions, and that the objects speak for themselves. I find in this an incredible freedom of interpretation, which is so common at these days, and so dangerous if not used properly.
~ The presence of performers within the installation, as an integrant part of the work. They attract and intimidate at the same time, with their calm gestures and sudden droppings of objects. I find it fascinating employing real people in a performative installation, and in particular the interaction they manage to create with the concretness of the installation.
~ The installation felt really close to theatre, so I might just note down here that Museum Art is getting closer to Theatre. Who knows, in the future we might not have a distinction between theatres and galleries, but only Visual Performative Spaces. It’s an idea.
~ The fact that the black shape is that of a head with a gaping mouth, trying to speak reminded me of all the buzz which occurs in our head, before we are able to put everything into words which make sense.
